My mom first mentioned it to me on the weekend, but it's now official. Barnaby and Oakley are going to have a new sister. The family is adopting a three-year-old Persian from a Port Perry animal shelter. Uh, yes. That's a bit outside of Toronto. However, my mom's friend's daughter works at the shelter and thought of us when the cat came in. Sadly, some stupid fuck abandoned the cat at the side of the road when she was pregnant with kittens. I believe the kittens were all adopted, which just leaves our girl. I think it's going to be at least a few days before she can be brought home. The poor thing has frozen nipples (which isn't surprising given how cold it's been in Toronto, never mind outside the city) and is going to be spayed on Friday. In the mean time, my mom is trying to come up with a name. She wants something literary because this Persian is such an elegant little lady. I actually found a website with female literary names (and another one with "beautiful" names), so I'm hoping it helps.

This is probably the first thing I should have done, but here's a picture of the new cat provided by the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Control Centre:

Isn't she gorgeous? I can't wait to see her. Apparently, she's been very chatty. My mom's friend's daughter thinks it's because she's so happy to come in from the cold. I think my mom's okay with chatty. She's just afraid that the Persian is going to be as focused on food as Barnaby. *g* Anywaaaaaay, you know there's going to be a future post with lots of pictures because who could possibly resist this Persian beauty. I know I won't be able to!

Oh my god! She's beautiful!

She has a bit of a "grumpy cat" expression! She's awesome!

She's almost enough to make her want one...sneezes... well, maybe not... She is gorgeous! I hope Barnaby and Oakley are very happy with a new sister!

Oh my god! She's beautiful!

Oh, thank you! I'm glad you think so! :-D

She has a bit of a "grumpy cat" expression! She's awesome!

Actually, I think all Persians have that expression because of their flattened faces, but maybe this cat exhibits it even more. My mom and I both love Grumpy Cat, so we have no problem with the comparison. Thanks for thinking she's awesome. :-D

She's almost enough to make her want one...sneezes... well, maybe not... She is gorgeous!

Unfortunately, I think she might be deadly for anyone with cat allergies, but you can admire her from afar. As I said in my post, there will definitely be more pictures. :-)

I hope Barnaby and Oakley are very happy with a new sister!

I think it will take some adjustment (cats hate change) and then Barnaby will be happy. I'm not sure about Oakley. He literally threatened to leave home (e.g. he went and stood by the side door) when Mom brought Minerva home, but he wasn't as huffy about Barnaby. Maybe he's mellowing. He's very much a solitary cat who saves his adoration for my mom and brother, but I think he'll put up with a new sister. *g*

She looks in need of some loving and she'll definitely get that in your family.

As for a name, I would call her Persia as a tribute to her breed and because it's a beautiful name.

Oh, what an adorable little creature she is :) I'm glad your parents were able to adopt her after her ordeal, I'm sure she's very grateful. And I can't wait to hear what name your Mum decides on for her, there's so many lovely elegant literary names.

Happy Valentine's Day *hugs* <3

Yes, I'm sure the poor thing could use some loving. She'll get an abundance of that at my parents' place. :-)

Great suggestion! That's a beautiful name! However, my mom seems set on a literary name and has narrowed the choice down to two (last I spoke to her). She informed me in her last email that she's made it her goal to read as many women authors as she can this year. Uh, she might regret sharing that ambition with a daughter who has an English degree. I can already think of four books to lend her. *g*

My mom was doomed as soon as the cat was mentioned. She finds it impossible most of the time to turn down strays, unless she has a full house already. In any case, I'm hoping the new cat will be happy. I know she's going to receive a ton of love and be spoiled rotten. *g*

And I can't wait to hear what name your Mum decides on for her, there's so many lovely elegant literary names.

I'll be sure to report it here. My mom now has it narrowed down to two choices. Surprisingly, they're not exactly elegant, though they're certainly literary. At the moment she's focused on the mystery genre...

Speaking of the mystery genre, I owe you a huge apology for reading Unreasonable Doubt (http://funkyinfishnet.livejournal.com/327950.html) and not commenting yet. I absolutely LOVE the story and think it's brilliant, which is why I feel all the more guilty. It's just been a crazy, hellish week at work. I've also been preoccupied with meeting a short story contest deadline. Anyway, I'll try my best to comment tonight or some time over the weekend.

Happy Valentine's Day *hugs* <3

Happy Valentine's Day to you too! I hope it's been a good one! :-D

Yes, after everything she's been through, I hope it's a smooth transition and there isn't too much friction between her and the boys. Barnaby can be a bit rough, so we'll probably have to keep an eye on him. *g*

Purrsia would be even better, LOL, but I can understand your mother wanting a specific type of name.

Oh no! Not the dreaded English degree. *grin*

I hope your mother has read all the Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. I'd be picky about which Margaret Atwood works to read (Alias Grace was great, Oryx and Crake not so much). I didn't enjoy Margaret Laurence's books when I had to read them in school, but The Stone Angel seems to have stuck with me because I still think about it from time to time...I guess that's a sign of literature as opposed to pulp. Of course, my favorite book by a female author is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

I am reading a Russian novel (Anna Karenina) at the moment...for fun!!! I think I prefer Dostoevsky to Tolstoy. The character of Anna is really getting on my nerves.

By the way, I still have a book and small gift to send you. They are sitting in my car that hasn't been able to move since before Christmas because it is in need of a battery. Working nights and sleeping days really interferes with getting things done because I'm asleep when businesses are open. My boots are also in the car waiting to be taken to the repair shop so your gifts are not lonely.

LOL! Oooooh! I like Purrsia! I wonder if I can convince my mom that Purrsia is this great literary heroine from a book that was lost centuries ago... *g*

Oh no! Not the dreaded English degree. *grin*

Actually, it's even worse than that. I started sorting through my books last week and came across all kinds of classics and literary gems, including an anthology of modern women authors. I, uh, have this habit of buying used books and then forgetting about them. *g*

I hope your mother has read all the Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.

My mom loves Jane Austen, so I'm sure she's read all the books. I'm pretty sure she's at least read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights when it comes to the Bronte sisters. I've read all of Anne and Emily, but not everything that Charlotte wrote.

I'm ashamed to say that I've read very little Atwood and Laurence. Like you, I didn't really enjoy Laurence in high school, though The Stone Angel definitely left an impression. I need to reread it some time -- and just read more Canadian authors in general! I have to confess that my current fave is still Robertson Davies, though even he's been neglected. I've only read The Deptford Trilogy and The Cornish Trilogy, though I've picked up some of his other books along the way (e.g. in used bookstores). And, yeah, I know. Robertson Davies is so not a woman. *g*

Of course, my favorite book by a female author is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Ooooh! Excellent choice! I can see why it's your favourite book! :-)

I am reading a Russian novel (Anna Karenina) at the moment...for fun!!! I think I prefer Dostoevsky to Tolstoy. The character of Anna is really getting on my nerves.

I've read Anna Karenina and seem to remember feeling the same way about her. I kind of failed to get through War and Peace. I'll have to try it again some time. As for Dostoevsky, I need to read more. I've only read Crime and Punishment, which I loved. I do have The Brothers Karamazov sitting in my bookcase.

It's so sweet of you! I'm touched that you would think of me! :-D Well, there's absolutely no rush for the book or gift. In fact, I don't mind if you give them to me next time we see each other (e.g. if you and [livejournal.com profile] lazigyrl make a return trip to Toronto (no pressure)). I'm sorry that you haven't been able to get a battery for your car or get your boots repaired, though it's not surprising considering that most shops don't cater to people who work nights. While the situation sucks, it's nice to know that my gifts aren't lonely. All the same, I hope you'll be able to take care of these things some time in the not too distant future.

From what I've heard, she has a very sweet temperament and, as you can see, is obviously adorable. I think we'll be gaining just as much from the adoption as she will. :-)

Most people want the kittens, but the mothers are left. I know your family will give her the love she deserves.

Yes, unfortunately, that's often the case. However, we've taken in at least a few adult cats in the past and we've always been happy with them. And we just had the kitten experience recently, so I don't think anyone feels they're missing out. She'll certainly receive lots of love. :-)

May the fuck who abandoned her get the shit that he deserves!

They say that what goes around comes around, so I hope that will be the case. People like that sicken me and fill me with absolute rage.

LOL! I'm pretty sure that won't be a problem. If I somehow fail to take pictures, I know my mom and sister will have tons of photos of their own. *g*

My mom has decided on Tuppence (as in Tommy and Tuppence). She was reading a Wikipedia entry on Agatha Christie and took her inspiration from there. *g*
