Summary: Maurice and Alec are fighting on the Western Front and their future seems rather bleak. Then, a brigadier, who might just be their salvation, lands in the sap one night when Alec’s on sentry duty.
Spoilers: General spoilers for Maurice (film and novel) and the Stalky & Co story, “In Ambush”. There are also fleeting references made to most of the other stories in Stalky & Co.
Notes: This idea took over my brain during the summer when I was on a Stalky & Co kick. I think Maurice fans should be able to read this without being familiar with Stalky & Co, but you can find background information here. For those of you who’d like more, all of the stories (with the exception of “Satisfaction of a Gentleman”) can be read online. Lastly, there’s a wonderful audiobook that can be downloaded for free on LibriVox and the long-lost television series has been FOUND and released on DVD in the UK! \o/
I did as much research as I could on the First World War, but I’m no historian. I’m sure there are probably anachronisms that went beyond artistic licence, which is impossible to avoid when you’re dealing with a character like Stalky. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, I’ve been a tiny bit self-indulgent as well. *g*

Disclaimer: Most of these characters aren’t mine, but the creations of E.M. Forster and Rudyard Kipling. I owe them a debt of gratitude – and probably an apology.
