Thanksgiving Album

Today is Canadian Thanksgiving, though my family had its main celebration on Sunday night. Thinking of Christmas cards and letters, I took a number of pictures. My sister helped as well. I thought I'd share some of the best

Picture of my mom and I preparing the turkey. Every year, my
sister chronicles this event. Most of her photos are of our
backsides or my arm down the turkey. You know how it is.

Barnaby (aka "The Prince of Darkness")

Try sharing a bed with him and you'll understand... *g*

Oakley doesn't like me and usually runs when he sees me.
I had to wait until he was high on catnip and locked in
my brother's arms before I could get a decent picture of him.

My mom was almost as much of a challenge.
I had to wait until she fell asleep.

My brother decided to start celebrating Halloween early

On Saturday afternoon, my sister gave me a tour of the NEW neighbourhood library. At first, I thought she was kidding when she said there was a library just down the street. Then my mom explained that the library is essentially a box, and people are free to borrow any books they'd like. The organization behind it is called the Little Free Library. It began in the States and has spread worldwide. I absolutely love the idea, which is why I asked my sister to take a picture of the library when she and my brother dragged Danna to see it.

The Little Free Library is a good idea. It wouldn't work here because all the books would be stolen!

Date: 2013-10-15 05:01 pm (UTC)Hey, aren't you supposed to be on holiday? I hope you've been having a wonderful time. :-D I'm glad you like the photos. As for Canadian Thanksgiving being just the other day, I can only say that time passes quickly. It's either that or you're thinking of Canada Day. *g*

Ah, thank you! I'm glad you think all the cats are gorgeous! :-D And you're absolutely right about that naughty gleam in Barnaby's eyes. He's a big troublemaker. If he isn't hiding objects like pens, he's shreading up toilet paper and wrestling with plastic bags in the kitchen. I should have included the picture of him biting Minerva's neck when she was washing. *sigh* Saying all that, he is very sweet and completely adorable. The "Prince of Darkness" sobriquet is partly a joke...and partly not. I ended up sleeping in my dad's bed because he and my brother spent both Saturday and Sunday night in the trailer. My mom says that whenever she glanced over at me, she'd see this lump pressed against my side -- a lump that was even darker than the darkness of the room. However, I think the name came more from the fact that I'd feel this presence beside me, roll over on my back, and find Barnaby standing by my head just staring at me. My mom says he does it to her too. Lastly, if he wants to be in bed with you, it's really hard to shift him. My mom says if she pushes him off, he bounces right back. Numerous times. I tried moving him around 3:00 am on Sunday morning because (like all cats) he had chosen a spot for himself right in the middle of the mattress. Carrying him to the living room didn't work. He beat me back to the bed. However, in his defence, he settled for sleeping pressed against my side after that. *g*

Yes, the Little Free Library relies very much on the honour system. I have fears that the one on my parents' street might be vandalized or have items stolen. Fortunately, everything seems to be going well so far. The library shelves are still full of books. :-)

Date: 2013-10-15 07:12 pm (UTC)I have to admit that I didn't know about them until Saturday, but I was instantly impressed when I saw the one on my parents' street. It really is a fantastic idea that seems to be spreading. :-D
Beautiful cats. :)
Ah, thank you! I'm happy you think so! :-D

The weekend was extremely good. And, yes, I'm also hoping that my mom has recovered. ;-)

Date: 2013-10-15 09:28 pm (UTC)From what I can tell by the website, I think you can start a Little Free Library anywhere in the world as long as you're not breaking any kind of zoning laws and have someone to build it. I tried looking on the website (http://littlefreelibrary.org/) to see if there were any Little Free Libraries in Britain, but I could only find a map of North America. I know the organization is estimating that there will be Little Free Libraries in 55 countries by the end of 2013, so I'd be surprised if there aren't any in the UK. :-)

Date: 2013-10-15 07:01 pm (UTC)And very fetching backsides and arms they are! Your sister took some great photographs.
Well, the combination of having to get the bird in the oven early and then the aftereffects of eating it could fell anyone!
I love the LittleFreeLibrary. I have never seen that before. Too adorable! I would have killed to have that in my neighbourhood growing up.
Your brother is clearly a Sleepy Hallow fan!

You're too kind, though I have to admit that my sister's photos are a bit more flattering this year -- not that I'm saying she's a bad photographer. She's a wonderful photographer. She certainly does a helluva lot better than me. *g*

Oh, the sleep was totally, totally deserved. I feel kind of guilty for taking a picture and posting it, but she wouldn't let me photograph her when she was conscious. She kept ducking out of shot. *g*

I knew nothing about it myself until Saturday, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. It's an absolutely brilliant idea because it's so easy to set up and allows people to have access to books with very little trouble. It would have been perfect for you growing up. I wish you'd had it. Here's hoping this project will benefit smaller and/or more remote communities -- not to mention people who may not have easy access to a library because of transportation and/or mobility issues.
Your brother is clearly a Sleepy Hallow fan!
Or he's just a freak! *g* Actually, I think he does watch the show and saw the Johnny Depp film. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if he remembers that classic Disney cartoon. That's my favourite version.

Date: 2013-10-16 04:59 pm (UTC)Oooooh! Thank you on my mom's behalf! :-D She deserves all the credit. I only help with the dressing and then stuff the turkey. She does everything else.
And all the cats look gorgeous. :)
Thanks again! Can't take credit for that either, but I'm happy you think so! :-D
It's such a coincidence that you have pics of the free library, I just learned about those the other day!
Ooooooh! Spooky but awesome! :-D I think it's such a fantastic project. I hope word continues to spread.

I love the photos of your family and the cats and the little library, that's an awesome idea.
I'm very happy you like the photos! Thanks again! :-D I'm also glad that you like the idea of the Little Library. It's such a wonderful resource for a neighbourhood or community, especially if people don't have easy access to a library.
Also the Halloween-esque pic of your headless brother made me giggle, it's the sort of thing Anthony would do.
I have a feeling that my brother and Anthony probably share some things in common, like a demented sense of humour. *g* In any case, I'm glad the picture made you giggle. :-)
Thanks for sharing the fun :)
No problem. I'm glad you got a kick out of it. :-D

Yes, we do. Sometimes, we have ham as well.

I'm sure there probably are some in Britain. A Little Library set up as an old red phone box would be so cool! :-)

Date: 2013-10-23 07:01 pm (UTC)I am trying to figure out how and where to set up a little free library here. Unfortunately, I rent and the landlord is not known for being helpful.
Can't wait to see you in less than 2 weeks.

It would be fabulous if you could set up a little free library, though it probably would be a challenge. You'd have to convince your landlord that it would be a good thing -- if you think your landlord would even be open to the idea.
Can't wait to see you in less than 2 weeks.
Same here! I'm really excited! :-D I'll send you a private message soon and we can figure out when and where to meet, etc.
