Tried to resist this. Tried to resist this for about two seconds and failed. Wanted it. Had to have it. Ordered it. Deed done. But it does look like an excellent book and a fascinating read for any Robin of Sherwood fan. If I haven't messed up the link, you should be able to click on the image above to find information on Hooded Man Volume 1: Robin of Loxley. The publisher's page includes a PDF preview (that pretty much sold me on the book when I first came across it on [livejournal.com profile] wolfshead) and a video interview with the author, Andrew Orton, though the sound quality isn't great.

I've been wanting to rewatch the series, so I think I'll do that while reading this book -- and Volume 2. Based on the PDF preview, Hooded Man Volume 1: Robin of Loxley should contain lots of fun facts and information that I haven't seen or heard before.

The author of Hooded Man was at the Con, happily selling his wares. He must have made a killing over the weekend!

So I'm here to tell you that it is indeed a fascinating read (at least - up to p.131, which is where I'm at - it's also a LARGE tome); with lots of detail about behind-the-scenes stuff; as well as digressions into things like - why the name 'Jennet' was an appropriate one for The Witch of Elsden.

I shall definitely be sending off for Part 2 in November.

I hope your copy arrives quickly and that you have a great time reading it.

I'm sure the con must have been a perfect place to promote and sell the book! And I can easily imagine Orton making a killing over the weekend! *g*

Oh, awesome! That's just what I wanted to hear! I mean, it looks like a fabulous book, but it means a lot more to hear it from such a passionate fan who already possesses so much knowledge of the show! I'm really looking forward to reading it! :-D

Good to know! I'm positive that I'll be doing the same!

I'm often pleasantly surprised by how quickly orders arrive from the UK. I'm sure it won't be long before it's in my grubby little hands! And I'm sure I'll love it! :-D

I bought this book at the Con and it is a great companion book. I was laughing that it is the book I planned to write back in 1986 but never got round to it so kudos to Andrew Orton for actually getting the job done!

Oh, that's wonderful! I thought I'd heard something about the author being at the con (which makes sense), so I'm glad you were able to pick up a copy there. And, of course, I'm very happy to hear such a positive review from such a huge fan of the show! :-D

I'm not surprised that you had such a brilliant idea, though I don't blame you for not getting around to it. Such a project seems like a really daunting task! Kudos to Andrew Orton for what must have been a lot of hard work!

I bought it too. It's an interesting read, but you'll be tempted to use your editor's pen on it a lot!

It's a shame about the editing. Smaller publishers (like Miwk Publishing) don't have the same resources as bigger publishers, which often means less money for the editorial department, if there is one. The editing might be done out of house by a freelancer. I have a Canadian mystery anthology that was basically self-published. Although there's an editor, I think this editor must have only been responsible for collecting the submissions and putting things together because the quality of the editing varies from story to story. This tells me that a lot seems to depend on the self-editing skill of the writers. Anywaaaaaaay, it sounds like the content of The Hooded Man is really good. I think that will help make up for the editing issues, as frustrating as that might be.

I'll have to lend the book to my mom. Although she isn't an editor, she has a habit of going through books and fixing typos. She's tried to force herself out of the habit ever since she corrected an error in a book that belonged to a friend of mine. My friend thought it was hilarious, but my mom was mortified. *g*

Yes, the content is really good. I read it fast and then went back to some parts to read again. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I understand your mother's habit! I do corrections mentally. I seem to notice grammatical errors and poor language more recently.

Yes, I'll make mental corrections too. Occasionally, I have to read a sentence two or three times to make sense of it, though that's not always a grammar issue. It's just brain freeze. *g*

Yes, unfortunately, I think the standard is slipping. I don't know if it's because editors are under tighter deadlines or if it's because proper grammar just isn't taught anymore. I know I pretty much had to teach myself -- and I still don't have all the rules straight. I keep trying to read books on writing and grammar when I can

[I had to go back and edit this because I noticed that I'd spelled "unfortunately" with two l's after I'd posted the comment. *g*]

I can see that this was hard to resist. :) That's a really awesome pic too. We're still waiting to be able to afford to buy the DVD box of the series. Watching and rewatching dvd boxes is so distracting.

I was amazed to discover that the book had even been written! I never thought I'd see a book like this about Robin of Sherwood, so I was thrilled! :-)

That's a really awesome pic too.

Yes, the cover is gorgeous. The designer has done an amazing job. It's simple and clean and, yet, extremely appealing, especially with that image. The cover design for the second volume is equally beautiful

I'm sorry you don't have a copy of the series on DVD. Sometimes these things go on sale, so you might be able to take advantage of a good deal. In any case, I don't think it's going anywhere, so you've got time. :-)

*happy wide eyes* Wow, that looks awesome! The cover is a great clean-lined photo. I'd buy that in a second, I wonder if they'll publish it over here as well? I must look into it. Thanks for bringing this to our attention and let us know what it's like! XOXO

EDIT: *headdesks* Oh wait, Emily you fool it's available in English pounds, it must be available over here. *sighs* Ignore me. I think I'll buy it for myself next month as my June treat :)

LOL! It's okay. You couldn't have known on first glance where the book was published, so the confusion is understandable. I'm not sure if it's available in UK bookstores or not. I think all the British fans I've spoken to bought it at the Hooded Man con. The other Canadian who purchased the book also had to purchase it through the website. Apparently, the airmail option is insanely fast. *g* In any case, I hope you enjoy the book if you do decide to buy it. :-)

I've found the book on the British Amazon and it's available here from 31st May so I'm looking forward to ordering it in June, possibly as a reward or feel-better gift to myself after my work meeting about the realignment of jobs :S After reading the preview of the book and watching the author's interview, I'm really looking forward to read the book :)

It's great that you can order it from Amazon.co.uk. I never even thought to look there. Well, from what I've heard, the book is a real treat. It should make a wonderful treat in June. :-)
