As I know there are at least a couple of theatre buffs on my flist (I'm thinking of you in particular, [personal profile] grondfic), I thought I'd share my Amazon review for Edmund - Son of Gloucester. I should point out, that my review is based on the recently published text of the play as I've never had the opportunity to watch a performance of it (other than a video clip from the playwright that I'll include after my review).

Chris Lambert's play "Edmund - Son of Gloucester" is a thought-provoking prequel to Shakespeare's "King Lear". Providing delightful hints and foreshadowing, this play delivers Edmund's origin story. We witness the events that forge Edmund's character and see the genesis of one of Shakespeare's most memorable villains. With its wonderful use of imagery, poetic language, existential questions, and Shakespearean themes, "Edmund - Son of Gloucester" is a fitting homage to the Bard and his famous play.

If you are a student of theatre, you will appreciate this edition of "Edmund - Son of Gloucester" for not only the play itself but the supplementary materials included with the text. There are are playbills, promotional photos, anecdotes about the production, theatre reviews, costume design sketches, and other worthy gems. If, like me, you're a fan of Robert Addie, you finally have the opportunity to read this play and imagine the performance he would have given as Gloucester. You also catch a glimpse of the man himself in humorous reminiscences about the production. Whatever your reason might be for wanting to acquire this play, you won't regret purchasing it!

Here's a 1996 trailer for "Edmund - Son of Gloucester," as well as an interview with Robert Addie:
