As some of you have probably guessed, I don't love my job. In fact, there are days when I loathe it. This would be one of them.

For some reason I can't fathom, someone in my company decided that it would be a brilliant idea to get rid of some of the online legal databases. This is all fine and good if the cases in these databases are going to be available elsewhere. However, in the case of one database I use frequently, some of the decisions don't appear anywhere else. That means I have to take extra time to track them down in the library. But, wait. The library only has the oldest and most recent cases for this particular legal series. I mean, it would be silly to have, oh, the entire series. I guess in some ways I should be grateful, as it will save me some work. Instead of walking halfway across the office to track down the texts, I can just leave a note for the legal editors saying that the decision can't be found. Anywhere.

On top of losing certain databases, we can't do parallel work or edit decisions because the main database is under construction...or something. Oh, and no new decisions are making it through because of it. Ergo, when I finish my current batch of decisions, I won't have anything to work on. Fortunately (depending on your perspective), I probably have enough work to get me through the day, but Monday could be a complete write-off if the main database is still offline. Kind of makes me wonder if there’s any point in coming in. There might be a TTC strike next week, but I’m afraid that won’t get me out of work as there's a contingency plan in place. If it's the same contingency plan as the last time the TTC threatened to strike, I'll be carpooling with a co-worker who likes to come into work around 8:00 and leave around 6:00. Oh, joy.

Why do these things have to happen when I have PMS? I already feel homicidal and have no coping skills. At all. I know things would seem less bleak if my hormones weren't raging. And, in case [livejournal.com profile] bakerybard happens to be reading this, I'm sure I'll be happier and saner (relatively speaking) by tonight. Honest. If nothing else, the prospect of seeing Fire should ensure that. Well, that and an A&W burger at the Yonge/Eglinton Centre food court. *g*

Hang in there, Rusty!

It does sound like a ridiculous idea to get rid of on-line databases, especially when the information is not available elsewhere. In fact, it sounds insane to throw away such information!

Happily, it seems like the TTC strike has been averted.

I hear ya about the PMS. Yesterday I actually got weepy when CBC played Bobby Jimby's Expo '67 theme, "Can-a-da". (I think you're too young to remember it. Be thankful! I was only 4 at the time, and the lyrics are still stuck in my brain.)

Also, I managed to be ridiculously late to my dance group last night from just plain cluelessness. (Actually, I'm semi-deliberately cultivating an aura of unreliability in the dance world these days, hoping they won't ask me to volunteer for anything else!) Tomorrow, I'm going to a dance workshop in the afternoon, and then I've "volunteered" to be the floor manager at the Contra Dance in the evening. I've been promised lots of help with that. Then again, if I'm inept enough they might not ask me to do it again. *g*

On the up side, I've made a pirate romance vid from the PBS mini-series "Frenchman's Creek" which might cheer you up if you're in the mood for sexy bare pirate chest (woo-hoo!):

The Bold Marauder
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwZ3h5AN1oo

And if that tempts your fancy, I'd be happy to lend you the DVD! LOL

Enjoy your burger tonight! (And what is "Fire"? Sounds intriguing.)

Cheers, Pyrate Anny

Oh, that's WONDERFUL news about the strike being averted! I haven't heard any news since about 7:15 this morning. Last I heard, they were talking about delaying the strike.
I'm sorry you're also experiencing the joys of PMS. Uh, I've probably heard the Expo '67 theme at some point, but I can't think of the tune or lyrics right now.

I'm looking forward to watching your latest vid. It sounds really good! I think I've seen at least one version of Frenchmen's Creek, though I can't remember which one. In any case, I'd love to borrow the DVD.

Fire (http://www.canstage.com/2007-2008/play.php?ID=13) is a production that is going on at CanStage right now. Because [livejournal.com profile] bakerybard volunteers as an usher, she received two tickets for free. I'm just lucky she decided to take me! :-)

Well, at least there won't be a stike next week, but they still haven't ruled it out entirely yet.

Be thankful you can't recall the lyrics or tune to the Expo '67 song. They're brutally insidious. And sung by children -- ugghh!

I'll bring the Frenchman's Creek DVD with me next time we meet. It's probably the same version you've seen, but well worth watching a second time. (I think I've watched it 5 times so far. *g*) For an extra added treat, try watching it with the "Described Video for the Visually Impaired" audio track on. It points out some rather suggestive visual imagery that I'd been oblivious to the first time few times I watched the vid. [Actually, the "Described Video" track is so hilarious, I intend to make a vid with it.]

Fire sounds interesting, inspired by the life of Jerry Lee Lewis. I'm actually a bit of a Rockabilly fan -- okay, well maybe more Psychobilly, but I do respect JLL's pioneering contributions to the genre. Anyhow, the music should be good. I hope you and BakeryBard enjoy the show. [And how kind of her to share her perk of free tickets with you!]

Ah. Okay. It seemed a little too good to be true. Still, it's great that there won't be a strike next week, especially as I took a chance and bought my weekly GTA pass yesterday.

LOL! Maybe it was so traumatic, that I blocked it from my memory! *g*

That would be awesome! Thanks! :-) I'll definitely try watching at least part of the DVD using the "Described Video for the Visually Impaired" audio track. Sounds even better than commentary! *g* I still have to watch your two latest vids. I'll probably get around to that tonight. I hope you do make a vid with the "Described Video" track because that would be hilarious!

Fire (http://www.canstage.com/2007-2008/play.php?ID=13) was fantastic! And, yes, the music was amazing! Ted Dykstra was incredible on the piano! If you're interested, I've just posted a review (http://rusty-armour.livejournal.com/23372.html) on Fire (http://www.canstage.com/2007-2008/play.php?ID=13). It's a bit long-winded (like most of my reviews), so you might just want to skim it.

I don't get it. Over here has to be digital and you get rid of the digital?!
I can see why that's frustrating! As for the rest - someone wise once said:

Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.

I know a lot of the legal cases in the removed databases were quite old. However, a lot of judges refer to old decisions, so editors still have to be able to track these cases down. Hell, lawyers and other clients would probably also like to be able to track these cases down! Maybe TPTB are eventually planning to add these older cases to other databases. However, it's going to mean extra work and frustration in the mean time. My supervisor already thinks I take too long to process decisions, so I'm sure she'll be thrilled when I take even longer because I have to make frequent visits to the library and can't quickly check cases on my computer.

Ah! It's hard to stay miserable in the face of a Monty Python song! Ironically, I've been reading about Life of Brian in Michael Palin's Diaries: 1969-1979 - The Python Years. Well, I've been reading about the Pythons lounging around in Barbados working on the final revisions for the script. *g* However, I'm sure it won't be long before I'm reading about the filming.

I keep meaning to pick up the new Immaculate Edition (http://www.amazon.ca/Monty-Pythons-Brian-Terry-Jones/dp/B000VE439Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1206810901&sr=8-1) of Life of Brian. I don't actually own any copy of it because I saw the film when I was a lot younger and never really warmed to it. However, now that I'm older and know a bit more about religion, I think I'd probably appreciate it a bit more.

It makes perfect sense to remove databases you need...NOT! Apparently, the same people are making decisions there who also make decisions about, oh, most things that make no sense (like planning to put siding on our townhouse complex in February!!!! - delayed because of a little thing we in Canada like to call winter!!!!)

PMS. Ah yes, I remember it. I don't miss it though. Of course, I *am* looking forward to the end of night sweats and hot flashes. I got my hair cut yesterday and was so ticked with the sweats that I literally got a brush cut. Yup. I got buzzed. I did leave bangs of about 1.5 inches; but the rest is short. BTW, it didn't help with the sweats.

If I recall the Can-a-da theme, it was "Ca-na-da. One little, two little, three Canadians. We love thee..." Not something nice. I now have it stuck in my head. Argh! And, yes, the whole song is running through my head. I had it on a centennial album (vinyl, state of the art at the time, ha!)

Good luck with the strike and the databases.

Yikes! I'm relieved that someone had enough sense to remember that little thing we in Canada like to call winter! Why would anyone put siding on a house or townhouse in February?! It's often the worst month of an Ontario winter!

My mom claims that menopause is worse than PMS, but I'm wondering if she ever had the kind of mood swings I experience or if she blissfully blocked them out. She seemed embarrassed and surprised one time when I burst into tears in the Scarborough Town Centre food court -- until I pointed out that I wasn't doing it on purpose. Anywaaaaay, I hate feeling hot, so I'll probably hate the night sweats and hot flashes that menopause entails. I certainly don't blame you for getting your hair cut really short, even if it hasn't made a noticeable difference. Have you tried putting a cold cloth or ice pack against the back of your neck? I know my mom swears by it and it helps me when I have a migraine. I have a herbal pouch from a company called "Granny's Little Helper" that I keep in the freezer.

Ouch! No wonder I haven't heard of it! I'm guessing either my parents refused to have the centennial album in the house or the RCMP was deployed to erase all traces of it! *g*

Good luck with the strike and the databases.

Thank you! Hopefully, both situations will work out okay. :-)

The databases issue seems a bit silly. Why would you get rid of a resource that makes peoples jobs easier and therefore makes them more efficient at their job? I hope this has been sorted out by now. In a way beneficial to you.

Chocolate is the answer to everything though, IMHO. Especially a shit day at work or PMS. I hope you're feeling better.

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] tazzles! I'm not sure what they were thinking when they decided to get rid of certain databases. I'm guessing that whoever made this decision didn't consider who might be affected or just didn't care. Ironically, it hasn't really been an issue for me lately because I haven't been able to work on my regular cases and, so, haven't needed the databases that have disappeared. *g*

Oh, I totally agree with you! I always turn to chocolate if I've had a bad day or PMS is getting to me. Fortunately, things have been pretty good lately and I'm definitely feeling better. :-)
