I've reached a new low in my John Simm obsession. I registered for emusic late last night just so I could download Magic Alex's "Dated and Sexist". John Simm was a founding member, songwriter and guitarist of the band. Oh, and I think he did some of the background vocals. The band was named after Yanni Alexis Mardas (Magic Alex), the Beatles' electronics wizard. Anyway, after accidentally watching a concert clip of Magic Alex performing "Breathe In" on YouTube, I just had to see if I could get my grubby little hands on any of their music. I was totally shocked to discover that the "laziest band in Britain" had released a CD that was available for download. I was sure that if a CD existed, it would be something that would be virtually impossible to come by. Well, not only was I able to come by it, but I shouldn't have to pay for the music because I'm on this seven-day trial period and I'm allowed to keep the first 25 songs I download, even if I decide to cancel.

At the rate I'm going, my MP3 player is going to filled with John Simm related music. I've already downloaded about 20 songs that were featured on the Life on Mars soundtrack. For the last couple of days, I've been downloading some songs from Human Traffic and 24 Hour Party People. I wonder what the music from Miranda is like. I've ordered that on Amazon.ca.

The music thing isn't even the worse of it. Not really. I read Crime and Punishment because John Simm plays Raskolnikov in the 2002 BBC version. Okay, the paperback was sitting on my bookshelf already and I had been planning to read it eventually. However, I think "eventually" was probably some time in the next ten years and not, like, now. Not that I regret reading it because the book totally blew me away. However, after watching clips from the John Simm version, I'm trying to talk myself into waiting for the DVD to be released in region one (assuming it will be) and not order it on Amazon.co.uk. As I have a multi-region player and own the PAL version of Robin of Sherwood, this certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility. However, I like being able to lend DVDs out to people. In the case of Crime and Punishment, I'm guessing my mom would be the only taker, but still...

During my John Simm romp through YouTube, I came across this great comedy sketch he did with Steve Coogan for "All Star Comedy 2004". Well, I thought it was funny, but I've always found ridiculous situations hilarious.

I need help. Serious, serious help.

Have you tried to track down all tracks of the LoM soundtrack? I think I got most of them (70s being my favorite era in music) but it should keep you occupied for a bit. :P

Wow. You're fast. I wasn't able to get all the tracks, but I think I got most of them. I also downloaded a couple of songs that I heard in episodes (like Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World") that weren't on the official soundtrack. I've actually been really tempted to go and search for some other songs that didn't make the cut. Unfortunately, the BBC Life on Mars (http://www.bbc.co.uk/lifeonmars) website has information on what music was featured in every single episode...

Sorry for the confusion - I wasn't referring to the official soundtrack but to all the music featured in the series. I've even been so crazy to track down all songs from Ashes to Ashes as well. *g*

Ah, I should have realized. No, I haven't been brave enough to track down all the music yet. That would be a mammoth task. I'm seriously afraid of what will happen when I see Ashes to Ashes because I love eighties music... *g*

Is a behaviour exhibited by a large majority considered a problem? I think the people who don't exhibit this type of behaviour have the problem. I mean, we *are* in the majority, so we should be defining what is a problem. *g*

According to my reasoning, you do not need an intervention. (I read Pride and Prejudice because of Colin Firth; and want to read Doctor Zhivago because of Omar Sharif.)

Well, thank you! You're right. We are in the majority and should be defining what the problem is. I just think that I might be starting the push the boundaries a little as far as even the majority is concerned... *g*

I have to confess that I probably first picked up Pride & Prejudice because of Colin Firth too, though I did read most of the other Austen books around the same time. I also saw Doctor Zhivago before reading the book. It's long but I can definitely recommend it.

Don't worry Rusty, I don't think your obsession's really that bad -- unless, of course, you've just gone out to buy a John-Simm-approved LADDER.

LOL! No, I'm not that far gone, though I have to confess that I've thought about my own ladder since watching the "Ladder Happy" sketch. If Steve Coogan were to suddenly appear in my apartment would he approve of the ladder that's in my closet? It's smaller than the one John Simms had, though it was given to me by my dad and I think he's learned a bit about ladders over the years being an electrician and all. Hmm. Maybe I should take a look at it just in case... *g*

I could mock, but that would be deeply, deeply hypocritical. *g*

Oh, you can mock. I mean, I've pretty much asked for it. However, I admire you for not giving in to hypocrisy. *g*

Oh Rusty, Been there, done all of that. Go ahead and order the DVD. I don't believe it will be released in region 1 any time soon.

LOL! It's great to meet someone who understands my affliction! *g* I may very well end up ordering it from the UK. It's £9.98, so the price isn't too bad. There's something else I'm interested in at Amazon.co.uk that's available for pre-order, so I might wait until closer to its release date and then make a decision.

The Mighty Simm

Dear Rusty, I live in Mexico and the mail is not always reliable here, so a friend from El Paso received my AmazonUK order and is bringing it down in a couple of weeks. I not only ordered Crime and Punishment, but also Canterbury Tales and Clocking Off Series One. I have seen them all either on TV or the internet, but I wanted to add them to my Simm collection.
I also picked up a David Morrissey series called Holding On. It was written by Tony Marchant and I believe won the BAFTA the year The Lakes was also nominated.
Where do you live and what do you do to keep occupied?
Nice to chat meet you.
Lisa

Hey, Lisa! Given your nickname, I suspected that you might live in Mexico. *g* I live in Toronto, Canada and I work as an editor. It's funny that you mentioned Cantebury Tales because that was the other DVD that was tempting me. I also wouldn't mind having series one of Clocking Off. So far my Simm collection consists of his Doctor Who episodes (though I didn't actually buy series three of Doctor Who for him), State of Play, Human Traffic, 24 Hour Party People and the Life on Mars episodes I've managed to download and/or tape off TV. Oh, and I've got Miranda on order from Amazon.ca.

I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to friend you. You don't have to friend me back unless you want to. Great chatting with you, Lisa! :-)

Rusty,
Of course you know I'm in Mexico. My name is just simmfan on other sites, but it was already taken on livejournal.
I have seen two episodes of the Canterbury Tales other than the one J.S. was in, and they were both very good.
If you haven't yet done so check out VEOH.com. Someone has uploaded several John Simm programs that are not available elsewhere such as Never Never.
My brother's wife is from the Toronto area, and they own a health food store in Thornhill along with her sister and brother-in-law. We visited several years ago and were impressed and surprised by the international flavor of Toronto.

Oh, cool! I've seen your name before. I could be mistaken, but I think it might have been on YouTube or MySpace. In any case, it's great to make your acquaintance. :-)

I have seen two episodes of the Canterbury Tales other than the one J.S. was in, and they were both very good.

I've actually been kicking myself because I remember Canterbury Tales being on TV Ontario not all that long ago and I didn't watch it! I'll have to keep an eye open for it in case TVO repeats it. I'm glad you enjoyed the episodes you did see. I caught a bit of it once and it looked like a good series.

If you haven't yet done so check out VEOH.com. Someone has uploaded several John Simm programs that are not available elsewhere such as Never Never.

Oh, awesome! Thank you very much for the tip! :-) I think I might have come across the site once, as I remember a page where you could download John Simm material. However, I was stupid enough not to bookmark it at the time and actually forgot about it. I'll know where to look now.

My brother's wife is from the Toronto area, and they own a health food store in Thornhill along with her sister and brother-in-law. We visited several years ago and were impressed and surprised by the international flavor of Toronto.

Oh, wow! Small world, eh? :-) I had an uncle and aunt who lived in Thornhill years ago. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Toronto. It's a very multi-cultural city, which is one of its great strengths.

I think we've all done this. Look at all the SPN related music I've got on my mp3. Although it did rekindle my love of AC/DC, so I'm not complaining.
Maybe we should start a support group. ;)

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who downloads music around a show, movie or, in this case, actor. Actually, I've started getting into Joy Division and New Order because of 24 Hour Party People, so I'm not complaining either. :-)

If my obsessive tendencies get any scarier then I might very well start a support group. I'll be sure to contact you if this becomes the case. *g*
