Rob Fuckin' Ford is mayor. Toronto is now completely DOOMED. :-(

On a purely selfish level, I'm pissed off because I had to stand in line at my polling station for about 35-40 minutes with this incredibly irritating little man who wouldn't stop talking to me. Even when I pulled out my book and started reading, he would be standing right beside me or practically be on my heels. After a while, I just stopped responding to anything he said, so he ended up making inane comments to himself about how long the line was, etc. The only break I got was when he'd see an empty chair along the wall and announce that he was going to sit down. As if I actually gave a shit.

I'm really tempted to pull a beer out of my fridge and down the whole thing. I need some way to cope with this horrible news.

*hugs* He's a strange one from what I've read about him.

We just dumped our conservative mayor here in Ottawa.

Strange and destructive. I don't even want to think about the kind of damage he could cause. He might actually make Mel Lastman look good in comparison. *g*

Woo hoo! Congratulations! I hope your new mayor serves you well! :-)

I'm sorry your side didn't win. :( I know exactly how that feels. For me, that's happened pretty much every election I've been allowed to vote. It's hard to please me. LOL.

Well, beer or wine or chocolate, whatever makes you feel better. Or maybe a good movie?

Oh, and I'm sorry about that incredibly annoying little man too. Some people...

You're not alone. I can't remember a lot of the candidates I've voted for over the years getting into office. I think what stings about this election is that a lot of people seemed to be against Ford, so it looked like there might be a chance he could lose. I guess I was hoping he would lose more than I realized.

I ended up going with my usual cure: fanfic. I started reading [livejournal.com profile] lazigyrl's recently posted Big Bang story, It's Only Love (http://archiveofourown.org/works/127980/chapters/181404) and some Lestrade fic. That helped cheer me up. :-)

I think if I hadn't had low blood sugar and was tired from work, I might have done a better job deflecting that idiot. I was tempted to tell him where to go, but it seemed to require too much energy and I didn't feel like dealing with the fallout.

Never heard of the man, but then... I'm not the best informed person when it comes to Canadian politics in general. *g* Will google him this evening and see what's the matter with him. :)

Well, I wouldn't expect you to know anything about Canadian politics and I certainly wouldn't have expected you to have heard of Rob Ford. Let me know if you can't find what you need on Google. *g*

Haven't start reading anything about him yet, but when I looked him up at wikipedia, my immediate reaction to his photo was, "He looks more Texan than Torontian..." *blush* I think I better start reading now...

Quoting Ford from Wikipedia,
"I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end of the day."

Now... as a Dutchman...

I FULLY sympathize with your plight. *hugs*

Yeah, that sounds like Ford. As you can probably see, the next four years are certainly going to be interesting... *g*

I admit to total ignorance of Canadian politics, but I'm sorry to hear that you've got a crap mayor, esp. when you didn't vote for him.

I loathe people who stand too close to me in queques.

You only need one beer?

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] karen9. :-) I don't expect you to know anything about Canadian politics. It's enough that you understand the concept of a crap mayor and the frustration of seeing the person you didn't vote for win an election.

I loathe people who stand too close to me in queques.

As you may have guessed, it's a pet peeve of mine aussi. I like my personal space and prefer complete strangers to stay out of it. *g*

Actually, I didn't end up drinking any beer. I stuck with club soda and read a lot of fic instead. *g*

urgh someone who can't take a hint-how thick must he have been?? Maybe he is one of those self conscious people who is on a mission to improve himself and talk to someone every day. Maybe you set him back 5 years *g* heheheheh ;p

I've noticed that most men aren't good at taking hints. You pretty much have to hit them with a 2 x 4 for them to get it. *g* I'm not sure what this guy's deal was. Maybe he was self-conscious, but I also get the sense that he needed to talk every two minutes or else hyperventilate. There are some people who can't stand silence. I swear that I've seen people on the bus call everyone they know on their cell phone rather than endure 20 minutes of not talking.

Toronto is four years behind the times. Ottawa has already been through the businessman who thinks he knows how things should be and then got booted out. Maybe Ford won't call out the army to shovel snow.

I am really sorry you had to endure the annoying man in the lineup. Lineups are bad enough without having to deal with inconsiderate louts.

In my small town, we now have a mayor who threw a temper tantrum and stomped her foot when she didn't get her way in a council meeting. Then again, she might be a big improvement over the previous mayor who had many shortcomings and a real sense of entitlement.

I wish Toronto was even further behind the times if it meant we didn't have Ford. Well, it looks like Ottawa survived the reign of the know-it-all businessman, so maybe there's some hope for Toronto.

Maybe Ford won't call out the army to shovel snow.

I was going to write a comment about him using immigrants instead, but then decided it probably wasn't a good idea. *g*

It really is amazing how badly I timed things. If I had arrived at the polling station just a few minutes sooner or later, I could have avoided him altogether. As I had a book, I think the lineup could have been bearable if I hadn't had to suffer his company. Oh, well.

It seems really sad, but she may very well be an improvement over the previous mayor and his many faults. I hope she proves to be an asset despite the temper tantrums.

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] avictoriangirl! The hugs are much appreciated! *Gives hugs in return*

I think [livejournal.com profile] puckrobin summed up the situation well when he said the following on his LJ:
"So, the city I've lived in for a decade and a half elected a homophobic, xenophobic, obnoxious, screw the poor Glenn Beck wannabe as mayor."

*Sends hugs in return* Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] alysscarlet! :-) I ended up skipping the beer last night, though I read quite a bit of fic, which is my usual cure for depression. Okay, reading fic is pretty much like breathing for me, but I think you get my drift...I did end up buying a box of Junior Mints tonight, but that had more to do with PMS and work than the election. *g*
