I finally did something I should have done ages ago and became a member of the Organization for Transformative Works (e.g. AO3). Considering that I practically live at AO3, it was about time I made some kind of contribution. In any case, it's nice to know that I'm supporting such a worthy cause and will have a voice if there's an organization election.

Yay! Congrats! I didn't realize that's where you were mostly hanging. I so love subscriptions and downloading. Plus hits and kudos and, well, everything really!

Thank you very much! :-) And I should probably explain that when I say I "practically live there," it's that I obsessively need to check for updates (e.g. click the "Lestrade (Inspector)" tag) at least once a day and see what's new -- though I do spend a lot of time there once I do find new material. I just find that it's the easiest way to find the stories I want. Of course, I still check my flist for fic updates as well. Anywaaaaay, as you said yourself, AO3 really does have everything a girl could ask for. *g*

That's awesome! Since I've been spending tons of time there too, I decided to follow your example and became a member too! :)

It's great to know that this post helped make up your mind about joining! I hope you really enjoy being a member! :-D

So what does being a member entail? I know you have to ask for an invitation to join if you want to contribute fic, but becoming a member obviously means more involvement.

I'm glad to see you can't get away from helping with organising fanfic!

To contribute fic, you just need to ask for an invitation, but to become a member you need to make a minimum contribution of $10 US. I think the main motivation for becoming a member is to help keep AO3 running as it is an archive run by fandom artists for fandom artists. However, if you become a member, you do have a say in any elections held by the OTW. I'd say that it also gives you an opportunity to be more involved with AO3, but I think you can volunteer for projects, etc. without being a member of OTW. Anyway, here's an FAQ (http://transformativeworks.org/faq/membership) on OTW Membership.

I would suggest you ask for an invitation to join (if you're interested in AO3 at all) and see how things go from there. I know it seems like a pain, but I think you'll find that waiting for the invite is worth it. :-)

Well, to be honest, it was about financial support more than anything, but I would certainly vote in any elections if nothing else. ;-)

I have made a donation as well. And after Sunday should hopefully have time to read a few things. An almost three week window between exam and start of next course.

Hi! Oh, I see! Thanks for explaining AO3 membership. I've only just started to receive 'donate! donate! volunteer!' emails from them – but I hadn't spotted that donating makes you a 'member'. (Not sure if a specific figure was mentioned, either.) My first reaction was to wonder about 'volunteering', but don-ing is probably more practical. And, as the number of readers for the fic I don't admit to now exceeds the print-run for my RL book, I'm probably costing AO3 money by now, so they deserve something from me. : )

Hi, [livejournal.com profile] exponential63! I'm glad this post made things a little clearer. I actually toyed briefly with the idea of volunteering for something, but, like you, I just know it's not a realistic goal. I don't have time to make such a commitment. In any case, it's great that you want to donate to AO3. :-) I'm actually surprised that they haven't held a pledge drive like this sooner. I'm probably being paranoid, but I hope they aren't having any financial difficulties and that this is just a way to ensure AO3's future well-being.

Thanks for the message regarding the Maurice fic recs! I'll try to answer it tonight if there's time.
