Talk about strange. I almost fainted while waiting for the subway at Sheppard Station. I wish I could blame it on low blood sugar, but, for the first time I can remember, I almost swooned over something I read in a book - Gyles Brandreth's Oscar Wilde and a Game Called Murder, to be precise.

Usually, I have no problem reading about murders. I mean, I've been reading mysteries for years. However, I'm squeamish when it comes to anything involving veins and blood. And Brandreth didn't hold back on the details. Before I knew it, I was feeling sweaty and nauseous. Then I was dizzy and there were spots before my eyes. I immediately closed the book and put it in my bag, but the damage had been done. Thankfully, I managed to stay on my feet and somehow made it on to the train when it pulled into the station. Although I was tempted to stick my head between my knees, I settled for closing my eyes. By the time I reached Eglinton, the spell had passed, though I was still feeling shaky. To be honest, I'm still feeling kind of shaky. However, as I'm a cyber geek, I'm pouring out this sad anecdote on LJ instead of, oh, eating or lying down. Hmm...as I'm about ten minutes into House maybe I'll do that now. Eating that is. Well, I'll probably dine on my bed, so I guess there will be a bit of lying down involved as well.

Yeah, it was pretty detailed or, at least, detailed enough to set me off. I'm sure there are lots of people who could read that scene and have absolutely no problem with it, but, like I said, I apparently can't deal with that particular kind of gore. Still, my reaction totally took me by surprise. I mean, I know I can be squeamish about certain things, but it isn't usually to that degree. Anywaaaay, I'm okay now, though I think I'm going to have to skip ahead to the next scene in the book because I still can't think about what I read without feeling a little nauseous. *g*

I find I feel what's going on in something I'm reading if I really get lost in the story. You must really be into the book you're reading.

I have to admit that I really am into this book. I loved the first one (Oscar Wilde and a Death of No Importance (http://www.oscarwildemurdermysteries.com/b1_description.html)) and the sequel is just as appealing - fainting fits aside. *g* Unfortunately, my imagination is sometimes a little too good and I got a really good visual of not just the murder victim but how it must have felt to, uh, die that way... *Shudder* Well, to my credit, I finished reading the scene. Thankfully, I had already gotten past most of the graphic details.

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] tazzles. I'm absolutely fine now. In fact, I'm still having a hard time believing that I almost fainted over a scene in a book. Too weird. Still, it is a brilliant book (IMHO). I'll be sad to see it end, which could happen today as I don't have much left to read.

Good for you for managing to stay conscious and keep your wits about you through the whole episode! And it might not have been entirely just a reaction to the gory scene in the book; you wouldn't be the first person to pass out just from the ordeal of taking the TTC!

Glad you feel okay now!

Well, I stayed conscious more out of fear of embarrassing myself than anything else. *g* Still, it was a relief not to pass out. Thankfully, the train pulled up when it did and I was able to sit down.

And it might not have been entirely just a reaction to the gory scene in the book; you wouldn't be the first person to pass out just from the ordeal of taking the TTC!

LOL! That's true! Quite a few people have passed out on the TTC! *g*

Glad you feel okay now!

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] pyrateanny. I appreciate your concern. :-)
