I probably shouldn't get too excited, but I think I might have made a research breakthrough for my original fiction idea. Because I continually have to make my life more difficult than it needs to be, I've been pursuing an idea that requires not only research into the paranormal but science (namely physics) as well. Well, I already had some knowledge of the paranormal, as it's been an interest of mine for quite a while now. However, science is definitely not one of my strong suits. Hell, I never even took physics in high school. I purposely took two languages (one of which was Latin) to avoid math and science. I mean, I have a BA in English for a reason. Fortunately, despite my inability to comprehend math and science, I think I've still managed to find a way to make my idea work. I need to do a lot more reading and thinking, but it's progress.

I love science as long as I don't have to write an exam. Math too.

I struggled with science throughout school. However, I've found that my interest in the subject has grown as time passes. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for math. I hate it with a fiery passion. It's been the enemy since the very beginning. I couldn't even grasp it in grade one. It's just something I'll never be able to wrap my head around.

Well if you start asking about Train A and Train B and when they'll meet... Let's just say I'd go flip the switch so we'll hear when they'll meet, rather than calculate it. But I do, sadly, like the logistics which probably explains why I'm in to programming. I just really don't cope well in Math exams (and other exams as well, but Math exams are pure evil).

I wouldn't be able to do an English major. Someone would expect me to study poetry at some point, which is a big non-no. I like reading poetry just don't ask me to analyse it or discuss it.

(p.s. Posted in the wrong place on the first try).

It's reassuring to know that even people who are good at Math struggle with the Train A and Train B question. I think I'd blow up both trains before they had a chance to leave the station myself...Just kidding. Mostly. *g*

BTW, if it makes you feel any better, I actually failed a math exam. It's the reason why I don't have my grade 11 credit. *g*

Yeah, the analysis can be a bit much sometimes. I know I always preferred discussing fiction over poetry. In a way, an English degree can take a bit of the fun out of reading.

No problem. :-)

Sounds like your story has the potential to be fascinating. :) Good luck with your research.

Even though I've always been bad at maths, I have also always been interested in physics, astronomy and related subjects. And don't get me started on quantum physics. LOL. Fascinating and scary at the same time.

Thanks for saying that, [livejournal.com profile] sublunarfields. :-) I don't know if it has the potential to be "fascinating," but I'll certainly aim to make it as interesting as I can. I hope that doing research will help. I'm trying to build a solid foundation and make the premise at least semi-plausible.

It's nice to talk to someone else who struggles with math. :-) I have to admit that I used to find science pretty boring, but my interest has definitely been growing in recent years. It's great that you've got such a keen interest in science yourself. Physics is something I've started to delve into, though I've been taking baby steps. *g*

You go girl!

There are some useful books on physics for the layperson. I have "The Handy Physics Answer Book" http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/The-Handy-Physics-Answer-Book-P-Erik-Gundersen/9781578590582-item.html?ikwid=the+handy+physics+answer+book&ikwsec=Home. It truly is handy. Google is useful, if you have developed sufficient knowledge to discern what is accurate from what is not. In my case, I tend to just use my husband's brain (not to munch on, zombies).

Ooooh! Thanks for the rec, [livejournal.com profile] njc2007! :-) I might pick up a copy of that book. I've been doing most of the my research online, but such a volume could still come in handy.

Apparently there is a series of books, but I just have the physics one.

I'm currently editing a math book. Me. The girl who graduated high school with 4 languages, music and history for a reason. Thank goodness I only have to check whether the numbers actually match and I don't have to recalculate. So I fully understand why you're excited at a possible science research breakthrough! :D

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] radiogaga80. :-) I'm glad the editing only involves checking to see whether the numbers match! It would probably be a nightmare otherwise!

BTW I love your icon! It ROCKS!

It's great that you have made headway with your research. It's brave of you to tackle an unfamiliar and difficult subject like physics. Looking forward to hearing of further progress.

Normally, I'd probably avoid a difficult subject like physics, but I'm going to need it to make my premise work. And it's probably less about bravery and more about selfish need on my part. *g* Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. :-) Although I'm pretty sure most people on my flist aren't that interested, I'll probably still post updates on my progress. I'm mean that way. ;-)

Yay for research breakthrough! Let me know if you want to discuss anything. Emailing things over with you has helped me work out more than one plot. Although I don't know how much help I'd be with the physics. Maybe I could find Rodney's number for you?

Thank you very much, [livejournal.com profile] jackycomelately! :-) I may very well take you up on that offer at some point. And, actually, any physics will be the most basic of basic physics -- the Law of Conservation of Energy and that kind of thing. Mostly, I'm just trying to make the quasi-science sound plausible. All the same, digging up Rodney's number might not hurt. *g*
