As I'll be seeing [livejournal.com profile] njc2007 and [livejournal.com profile] lazigyrl in less than a week, I decided to choose "Log Driver's Waltz" as this year's Canada Day vid. I know [livejournal.com profile] njc2007 is very fond of it -- as all Canadians should be!

As is often the case, I don't have any plans for Canada's birthday. I'm hoping to go to Edwards Gardens this afternoon and maybe I'll work Due South or a David Hewlett movie into my viewing schedule for a bit of Cancon. Yeah, okay. I'm a totally crappy Canuck. *g*

Ah yes, but you're LISTENING to LOREENA! Mask and Mirror is THE best *bows to your impeccable Canuck musical taste*

I'd forgotten that you were a Loreena McKennitt fan! Yes, I felt it was only right to listen to something Canadian. And I'm ashamed to admit that I don't own a lot of Canadian music. I also don't watch hockey and I think poutine is disgusting. Hell, I know a British girl who had a more Canadian Canada Day (http://funkyinfishnet.livejournal.com/252022.html) than I did. As a Canuck, I seriously suck. *g*

I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of poutine before and had to Google it. I just LOVE that it started life as a quickie-leftovers dish, and then finished up with 'optional extras' including lobster and caviar!

Anyways, having scrutinised the obligatory Picture Gallery (see link), I'm inclined to agree with your judgement that it may be disgusting.

Well, you're ahead of me on your poutine knowledge as I didn't realize that it had started out as a quickie-leftovers dish and could include lobster and caviar! If I could lose the gravy then I might be on board with the lobster variety. *g*

Those images you found really do capture the sheer horror of poutine. *Shiver* If you're looking for a really tasty Canadian treat then I would recommend a Beaver Tail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver_tail_(pastry)). Uh, it's not what you think. It's pastry -- and it doesn't contain any actual beaver. ;-)

Actually you just gave me a tiny plotbunny about upmarket poutine being served ... um somewhere VERY posh in London's Fashionable West End (to celebrate Canada Day of course); and Guess Who might be involved in eating it *points very subtly at icon*

I assume that Beaver Tail is packed with carbohydrates? Starches? Sugars? Thought so - yay! Right up my street!

LOL! Oh, that would be awesome! I'm really looking forward to that fic! :-D

Oh, yes, indeed. I'm pretty sure it's packed with all three. *g*

I shall attempt to shoehorn the poutine into the third part of the latest trilogy (me having just finished what might - or indeed, might not - be described as The Two Towers-ish part).

Not sure I can also include Beaver Tails, especially as it would be in French on this exclusive menu - Queues de castor? (Do they call it that in Quebec??)

No worries if it doesn't make it into your The Return of the King-ish installment. I mean, if it fits, that's great, but don't force it if it doesn't. :-)

I just did a quick search and it looks like they do call them Queues de castor in Quebec! *g* However, I wouldn't worry about including them, unless you think of a way to make them work and it's something you want to do. :-)

Well, I do have to shoehorn teh hawt sex into it somewhere along the line! However, sex AND beaver tails would be Quite Something methinks ....

*looks critically at that last sentence and runs away very fast*

You are ahead of me on the celebration, though I could argue that I've watched something made in Canada, even if it isn't Canadian per se. :)

I love the Log Driver's Waltz. Possibly because my grandfather (my mom's dad) was a logger. I never met him, he died the year I wsa born (interesting fact: her mom died the year my brother was born).

Oh, I've been doing some OHIP homework, that's Canadian.

Well, I think that kinda counts. There would have been a Canadian film crew and I'm guessing a lot of the actors would have been Canadian as well. :-)

Oh, cool! It's great that your grandfather was a logger. I'm sorry you never had a chance to meet him. And I didn't think of it at the time, but my paternal grandfather used to work in a logging camp in his teens.

Oh, I've been doing some OHIP homework, that's Canadian.

If you were doing OHIP homework, I think you win. *g*

Me too! The most Canadian thing I did today was watch that video! The expression on the moose's face cracked me up. There was a town not far from where I grew up that had a paper mill. I remember rafts of logs floating down the river. No log rollers however!

I hope you had a great time at Edwards Gardens, eh.

Well, other than watching the Due South pilot, that was about all I did as well. :-)

The expression on the moose's face cracked me up.

It is a great expression. I hadn't watched "The Log Driver's Waltz" in ages, so I'd forgotten how clever the animation is.

All the same, you at least had those logs floating down the river, so I'm guessing "The Log Driver's Waltz" brought back at least one childhood memory. For me, not so much, though I do remember them showing that NFB film a lot when I was a kid.

I hope you had a great time at Edwards Gardens, eh.

It was hot but nice. I walked around a bit and did some reading. Nothing very exciting, but it was good to get out. :-)

Happy Canada Day! And yes, Due South should totally be watched. It's one of my favourite Canadian things as I just adore it so much and it never fails to make me smile. It's so darn feel-good :) xoxo

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] funkyinfishnet! :-) I hadn't seen the Due South pilot in years, so it was great watching it again. And I so have to organize a little Due South locations tour when you visit Toronto. I spotted a great location last night when watching the pilot. Gerard's trial takes place at Old City Hall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_City_Hall_(Toronto)) -- something I'd completely forgotten. You even see a streetcar passing behind Fraser in one shot, which is just so Toronto. In any case, I'll have to point it out to you if we end up on Queen at any point. Of course, you and Anthony could probably find it yourselves, especially if you end up at the Eaton Centre at all. Old City Hall is right across from it.

Thank you for that. NFB shorts were a staple on TV when I was growing up and I think that's my favourite.

I did very little on Canada Day. The only Canadian thing I did was work on the OHIP Billing course. (Trying to get well ahead before Polaris.) Hubby and I went to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel last night.

Looking forward to seeing you again this coming weekend. *hugs*

Yep. Same here. NFB shorts and Hinterland Who's Who. :-)

Well, at least it was productive. Other than doing some dishes and folding laundry (which aren't distinctly Canadian), I didn't do anything productive and Canadian.

Hubby and I went to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel last night.

Oh, how was that? I've been debating whether it's worth seeing or if I should just wait until my Mom gets the DVD, which will probably happen knowing her.

Looking forward to seeing you again this coming weekend. *hugs*

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing you too! :-D I'll PM you a little closer to the time so that we can discuss where we're going to meet, etc. I'm going to try to get there as soon as the pre-registration desk is open. I think that's 9:00 am.

We'll be out of Ottawa early on Friday, so PM Thursday if you want a response. Do you still have our cell numbers? Is yours still the same? We can always connect by cell when you get there.

I'll be sure to PM on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. I'm pretty sure your numbers are still programmed into my cell phone, but I'll check to make sure. My number hasn't changed. What I'll probably do is call you when I get there. As I said before, I'm hoping it's around 9:00 am at the latest.
